The Bom Jesus Feast in Peixe Cru Cavalcade in Peixe Cru Farmhouse in Mandassaia

Cemig is producing a Cultural Heritage Register of the municipalities influenced by the project, which effectively began in March, 2004. The program will be developed over the course of two years and will involve a series of activities, which have as their goal the preservation of the culture, architectural heritage and the traditional know-how of the communities in the area surrounding the Irapé Hydroelectric Plant.

An architectural heritage register is being compiled, which will contain photographs and drawings of the buildings with the greatest historical significance along with historical data on the properties. Miniature models of buildings and of the village of Peixe Cru itself are to be made. In regards to the architectural heritage, another important undertaking was the reconstruction of the Bom Jesus de Peixe Cru Chapel in the new village, thus preserving a referential symbol of paramount cultural and historical importance for the local population.

In the beginning of 2004, the compilation of a register of all such assets as machinery, mills, sugarcane crushers, alembics (stills) and waterwheels, among other objects like religious figures, pans and ceramic utensils and antique tools, was started. This mobile asset register is directly linked to the regional population's traditional trades and daily activities, which are to be identified and registered as the important manifestation of the culture of the Vale do Jequitinhonha that they are.

An additional register of local know-how and typical day-to-day tasks will be produced, in which the oral traditions and festivities of the region will also be documented. In regards to intangible assets, that is, artistic creations, feasts and ways of living and forms of self-expression, research was conducted by Cemig on the traditional festivals, folkloric activities and musical heritage of the communities. Traditional wisdom and know-how have been recorded by means of videos, pictures and CDs and shall constitute an important collection of this rich heritage. In addition, photographs will also be taken of the families living in the area encompassed by the project and every family received three copies of these photos.
