A broad social communications
program is being developed for
the Irapé project. The program
incorporates a gamut of
activities targeted at the
various segments of society and
utilizes a newsletter, a weekly
TV program, a jobsite visitation
program, a mobile unit,
informative meetings, pamphlets,
booklets and leaflets. These
activities are also included as
part of institutional and public
relations activities that seek
to garner an appropriate level
of recognition for the culture
and people of the Jequitinhonha
Valley and the North of Minas
Gerais..

This program of supervised
visits to the jobsite satisfies
the interest on the part of the
various sectors of the
population to see and understand
the project. Through the visit
program, regional authorities,
teachers and professors,
technical school and university
students, secondary school
students, businessmen, members
of the communities influenced by
the project and the public at
large gain access to the jobsite.
This social communications
program has helped Irapé win
the support of various segments
of the population, who gain an
ever deepening understanding of
the size and social importance
of the enterprise.

Amongst the communications
activities, there are numerous
undertakings that highlight the
cultural manifestations of the
Jequitinhonha Valley. Therefore,
in the month of May, both in
2004 and 2005, among other
occasions, a number of
communities, which are located
in the region around the plant
and specialize in arts and
crafts, were invited to
participate in an exhibition to
display their artwork at Cemig's
head office as part of a
cultural showcase. Artisans
representing their communities
were present, showing the
weavings from Roças Grandes and
Berilo, the arts & crafts
from Chapada do Norte, the
ceramic art from Turmalina and
Minas Novas and the embroidery
from Turmalina.
Besides demonstrating the fine,
rich work produced in the
Jequitinhonha Valley, the
exhibition also served to
promote the socio-cultural
integration of Cemig's employees
with the Valley's people. By
assisting the craftspeople with
transportation and accommodation,
Cemig helped them to overcome
the problem of getting their
work exposed outside of the
Valley. They enjoyed brisk sales
and were deeply moved by the
warm reception they were given
at the exhibition.
 One
of Cemig's most celebrated
initiatives was the sponsorship
provided for the Presidente JK
Plant Song Festival that was
held in September, 2004 in
Turmalina. Held in partnership
with Festur - the Turmalina Song
Festival, it was conceived with
the idea of promoting
integration and cultural
exchange among the
municipalities encompassed by
the project.
Boasting the theme of "The
Meeting of the Waters", the
Presidente JK Plant Festival
brought together representatives
of the seven municipalities:
Berilo, José Gonçalves de
Minas, Leme do Prado, Turmalina,
Grão Mogol, Cristália e
Botumirim. Each municipality was
represented by a contestant they
selected, which greatly
contributed to the show and
further increased the stature of
Festur, now in its 19th edition,
and demonstrated the remarkable
cultural virtues of the people
of the Jequitinhonha Valley and
the North of Minas Gerais.
The winning songs were ranked as
follows: 1st place, Mágoa de um
Caboclo, from Botumirim, written
and performed by Roberto Carlos
Bispo; 2nd place, O encanto das
águas, written by Enderson
Mendes, from Turmalina and
performed by Enderson Mendes and
Kleiberson; 3rd place, Meu
Jequitinhonha, written and
performed by Valmir de Oliveira,
from Leme do Prado.
Contestants were awarded
trophies and cash prizes: R$
1,200.00, for first place; R$
800.00, for second place; R$
500.00, for third place. The
cultural bodies of the winning
municipalities who had put forth
such an effort in selecting
their contestants, also received
recognition awards: Botumitirim
was awarded a microcomputer;
Turmalina, a television and DVD
player set; Leme do Prado, a
printer.
